LIBRARY PUBLIC SERVICE SPECIALIST
Location: Downtown Dallas, TX | Onsite

COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE
• $20/hour
• Full-time, 40 hours/week
• Rotating evenings and weekends required (typical shifts 8:15am–5:15pm; evening shifts 11:15am–8:15pm; weekends until ~4:15pm)
• W2 Employment

ROLE IMPACT
The Library Public Service Specialist connects the Dallas community with educational, cultural, and informational resources through outstanding customer service and technical assistance. This position plays a key role in ensuring positive library experiences across eight public service floors, supporting research, public outreach, and technology access at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide reference and research support across all subject floors, assisting patrons in locating materials and using digital resources.
• Deliver excellent customer service, responding to inquiries, resolving issues, and guiding patrons through library programs and services.
• Engage with the public through outreach activities, including school visits and community events.
• Maintain library collections through sorting, shelving, and organization; assist in creating displays and special exhibits.
• Support patrons in using computers, databases, and software; troubleshoot user and system issues.
• Monitor and report maintenance or equipment needs to ensure a safe, accessible, and welcoming library environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• 3 years of customer service or library experience.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research, communicate effectively, and manage multiple public inquiries.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage diverse community members.

CORE TOOLS & SYSTEMS
• Integrated Library Systems (ILS)
• Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Online reference databases and catalog search tools
• Public access computers and self-service kiosks

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience with community outreach or public engagement initiatives.
• Familiarity with library reference tools and research databases.
• Bilingual communication (English/Spanish) highly desirable.
